The history of this issue "goes back" in July 1977 when the 100 Division SY Yaremenko performed the first draw on the suspension of the Su-27 "ventral tank large capacity.Subsequently, by analogy with the F-15C / D, equipped with containers «FAST PACK», they were called conformal. Interest in the KTB was quite natural, because, being located between the engine nacelles, he approached the layout of the Su-27 to the previously studied so-called"Underarm" scheme. Due to peculiarities of assembly scheme the aircraft had hoped that the use of KTB can provide for the suspension of the conformal tank improvement (or at least not worsening) of aerodynamics by:
reduce friction drag by reducing the total surface washed 
aircraft;
reduce the wave resistance by forming a joint schedule of cross-sectional areas ligament "plane + KTB.
Conformal tank was planned to perform a single, unified in design, both for basic fighter, and for its modifications. According to the general requirements of KTB had to have a streamlined shape, selected from the conditions: a minimal effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of the original aircraft, ensuring stable operation of the propulsion system on all modes of flight.
Work on the image of the KTB were carried out in several stages, and in 1979 accompanied by the construction and testing models in wind tunnel of TsAGI, while considering various options.
